ERP is like a Baby
Well attending a seminar
enlightened me about ERP and essentials of ERP .The seminar focussed only on
positives of ERP but there are lot of challenges in implementing ERP.Well one
should understood that ERP is not a complete product rather it is a
semifinished product that tries to automate both internal and external
information systems.Previously ERP was used to integrate only basic functions
in an enterprise but know it has increased to newer level were ERP is
integrated with suppliers/vendors and also customers if possible.
Now question comes should every
organization go for ERP?Organizations think that our business is not doing well
lets go for ERP?Our records are too much paper work is more so lets go for
ERP?Whatever may be the reason ERP implementation cannot be a solution. One
should understand that above mentioned are problems in the process so if you go
for ERP implementation it will just automate the process but not change the
existing process .Above questions need
process management techniques rather than ERP.There is a very small line of
difference between these that companies need to understand.BPM is much a macro
term and ERP acts as a enabler in BPM.
There are also companies which
while implementing ERP did lot of
mistakes. These are global giants .Take the case of hp,Hersheys,Nike and many
others. All these companies either had issues in change management, lack of tap
management, poor planning and most importantly wrong approach. So ERP is like a
baby and one should patiently listen to its needs and pampered and loved like a baby
only then the ouput would come out.
Some basic questions need to ask
before making a call on ERP are:-
1. How
can ERP help to improve a company’s business performance?
2. How
long does an ERP project take?
3. What
things will ERP correct in My Business?
4. Will
ERP fit into the ways I do business?
5. What
does ERP Actually cost
6. When
will I get returns from ERP?
7. What
are the hidden costs of ERP?
If these questions are crystal
clear in the mind of company then so to say challenges of implementing ERP will
be reduced and company would achieve their goals and vision.
