3 captaincy theory
Ever since T20 has come into
Gentleman’s game.It has given cricket the necessary makeover which it was
looking out for.Almost 8 years after its invention all the test playing nations
have their own T20 leagues.Be it IPL ,Big Bash or any other. This gives
selectors a really tough choice to choose for because there would be pool of
players that need to be considered .This is a actually a good headache for
selectors as it increases particular team’s bench strength. The other headache
which countries are facing are whether to keep 3 different captains for 3
different formats .i.e T20,ODI’s and Test cricket.
Each format in itself presents a
unique challenge in its offering .Test cricket being more traditional way and
tests the temparement of players, while ODI cricket is all about planning, mixing caution with aggression and handling pressure while T20 is all about
High speed cricket,Aggressive cricket and risk free cricket. Each format has actually demanded specialists inorder to
meet this challenges. All the teams and captains have understood it.Now bigger
debate is whether to have 3 different captains or go with one captain. Is it the
way ahead considering the challenges that each format throws. Advantage of
having 3 different captains is it
clearly defines the roles and responsibilities and allows particular captain to
focus on one format and become specialized in that. It also relieves the
pressure on the captain specially on long tour .Captaincy also in 3 formats is
different and having 3 different captains will actually help in making them specialists.Diasadvantages of having 3
different captains is specifically if a particular player is playing in all
formats then it become challenging to adjust to different captaincy.Secondly
role of coach becomes more pivotal because there would be high possibility that
T20 captain would be playing under ODI captain and vice versa. So coach has to
play a key role in maintaining calm in dressing room .It is challenge for
players, captains and coach going ahead with each format having its own
integrity and providing distinct opportunity.ICC constantly changing the ODI
rules,T20 rules almost 3 years with
respect to power plays, filed restrictions etc. I believe that most of the teams would start adopting 3 captaincy theory
