What does a PMO do?
Project is a temporary endeavor which has definite start and end and also has assigned cost ,time attached to
it.This is definition of a project .But now if you ask anyone in corporate irrespective of hierarchy all say there are no projects, there are no
business.It is difficult times business
is going through. Then I wondered every IT company has a PMO (Project Management
Office) .PMO looks after smooth transition of projects from initiation to migration
in place.PMO also monitors whether each
project follows the Project Management practices and are also in accordance
with want mentioned by client. Now I thought since each company has very less
projects then what does a PMO do.But when I asked, enquired I was astonished
that kind of work a PMO does .
I also understood that the importance and
significance of PMO in IT company. Some of functions that PMO does are:-
1.New projects launched:-PMO looks out for new projects that have
been launched and also looks out no of pipeline projects present in financial
year.It also plans for these projects i.e from manpower, competencies required, cost
,schedule and also related important things.
2. Projects completed:-PMO
also analyses the no of projects completed in financial year .It finds out the
type of projects executed .Project category can be software development, maintenance
related,business innovation and etc.
3.Status reports:-Monitoring of projects is one of the difficult
tasks in a project. While executing each project there will be lot of issues, risks
involved in project. It may be schedule overrun, cost overrun etc.So PMO keeps a
track of the executing projects whether they are in red, amber or green.Red
means danger, yellow means issues and green means on track.
4.Trend analysis:-PMO does a trend analysis .It looks out the
projects executed, projects completed and finds out a whether there is a trend
or not.Based upon trend PMO analyses the forecasted projects for next
year, forecasted resources and based upon that manpower and competency planning
and forecasting is done.PMO also finds out ROI for each project and takes
decision on type of project that it should take in future.
